Prober - Production Clamshell Bed of Nails Testers

Prober
Production volume test fixture with swappable test plates, front and rear panel inlays, and multi-testing compatibility with process carrier pallets. Swappable test plates provide the ability for one fixture base to support a variety of units under test. Interchangeable front and rear panel inserts provide further customization. Interoperability with process carrier pallets provide multiple board testing capabilities, panelized testing, and flex circuit testing. A selection of interfaces to general testing equipment provide for a wide selection of customized testing features.

Edge Press Technology provides high access to the top side of the board for troubleshooting, making adjustments and visual monitoring. Edge press is required where high component densities limit press down rod access. Edge press technology provides low board flex required by large high density component packages.

Front and rear panel inserts fold in and pull out with the Bed of Nails plate. The press plate quickly removes with a quick change pin. BON, Press, and panel inserts are interchange able.

Multiple Board testing in Panel Form

Some circuit boards can be tested in only a fraction of a second. However, it takes an operator at least 4-10 seconds to load and unload the board into the test fixture. Since the actual test is so fast it is barely a factor even when 12 tests are multiplexed, testing in panel form almost increases test speed by a factor of 12.

Some circuit boards take a long time to test. In this fixture, 3 boards are tested in parallel, not multiplexed. Due to operator limitations on loading and unloading each board, Testing speed is not quite tripled, but it is more than doubled with this test strategy.

Flex board testing

Flex boards supported underneath by a stiffening plate which rides on 4 springs under each corner. This is common practice for testing a variety of flexible circuit boards or combinations of flexible and rigid boards.

Edge press technology is extremely conducive to testing boards with very odd shapes including this long narrow board approximately 12” long by ½” wide. Imagine the shape of the ruler on your desk and trying to hold that parallel while pressing against 100 test pins.
Not Sure if You Can Build a Fixture Kit?
With the Prober-EZ build kit, all you need is a drill press, a few basic hand tools and two days. Download the EZ Fixture Kit Instruction Manual Picture Book. The Instruction Manual was written as a highly illustrated picture book to allow even non-English speaking users to follow the process and build a precision fixture. Using the methods in this manual it is possible to build a fixture to accuracies comparable to a CNC milling machine using only a drill press and a few basic hand tools! Basically the technique is to use a blank board as a drill template. Since the blank board was drilled with a precision CNC drill, the results of using a drill press with the blank board as a template will approach the accuracies of a CNC machine. The resulting fixture will have enough accuracy to probe small 30mil diameter targets spaced as close as 50mil.
